FAQ: How long does a divorce Take?

By Katherine Sierra-Kelly

The length of a divorce will vary from case to case. The divorce process may take as little as a couple of weeks or up to several months or even years. If the parties are unable to reach a quick agreement and the court is asked to make a decision about custody and property after a hearing or trial, you’re likely looking at months instead of weeks.

Moreover, many States have a required timeframe that must run prior to the finalization of your matter, even if you are in complete agreement.

Aside from the required time by law, other things can lengthen the amount of time it takes to finalize your matter. Disagreements about issues such as setting a parenting plan & obtaining financial information when assets and property are in dispute can cause your matter to run longer than you might like.
