The length of time a protective order is in place will vary from case to case. The court will often look at several things, such as the severity of the allegations, if there are pending criminal charges, whether this is the first time the person seeking to be restrained has had a protective order filed against them, and so on. Most often, protection orders will be in effect for about a year, however, depending on the circumstances and state law there may be the possibility to extend this.
